Psychiatrists specializing in dissociation.
Hi, I need to get a psych assessment done. Thing is, I need a psychiatrist who specializes in dissociative disorders. I have looked at different profiles through google, where they mention treating trauma but that's not exactly informative, cause they run off a long list of every disorder. I need someone who's primary interest and expertise is in dissociation. I know of one in Queensland but none in Sydney. Help!

Re: Psychiatrists specializing in dissociation.
hi @Lemonjuice , I've never read up on my pdoc. I just rocked up to my first appointment & took my meds.
I thought there was only one dissociative disorder, DID. Are there others? If there's just the one that may be too narrow a field for a pdoc to work in, might not be enough work. Sydney's a big city so I'm sure you'd have more choice of pdoc there than in Qld. My understanding is that DID & dissociation is caused by childhood trauma (mine is) so you'd be on the right track with treating childhood trauma.

Re: Psychiatrists specializing in dissociation.
I didn't check my shrinks the first few times, but because I have studied psychology, had a lot of bad experiences, been misdiagnosed a few times, etc, plus the fact that DID is not accepted by some shrinks, I have become cautious about who I tell and treatment options.
Dissociation, just means separating from reality, so, depersonalisation (you don't feel real), derealisation (the world doesn't feel real), are types of dissociation. Also, there's fugue states, that is, forgetting who you are, like amnesia. DID is fragmenting and compartmentalization of memories, emotions and identity. There are different ways of treating it, psychodynamic, dialectical behaviour therapy, etc. I find behaviour therapies problematic, so I prefer therapists who use psychodynamic model.
