MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Hi all,

I have been exhaustively searching for an MBT specialist in Melbourne and am unable to find any that are taking new patients or have a waitlist. I've only spoken to one [edited by moderator] clinic that confirmed that they have MBT clinicians but are not taking anyone new on board.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have been using multiple resources (must admit, AI has helped with the researched) and contacting those who fit the bill.

Seeking guidance.

Hi @peaceandsafety

Hearing your frustration over your search to find an MBT clinician that's currently taking on new clients. I know it can be really hard and there often feels like there's not enough specialised clinicians to meet the demand.

While we can't discuss or recommend specific clinicians or practices due to our guidelines around privacy and anonymity*, as well as wanting to ensure we don't unknowingly allow any sneaky advertising in this space, members are encouraged to nudge each other in helpful directions and share tips and knowledge that may make your search a bit easier.

*Just a quick note that due to these guidelines we have had to make a slight edit to your post to remove the name of the specific clinic mentioned.

Hey @peaceandsafety ,

I hear you are looking for MBT clinicians. It's a growing field and there are MBT clinics slowly training new clinicians.

I've completed an intensive 18+ months of MBT. I'm interested it hear what is drawing you to MBT?

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

hi @peaceandsafety - i am a bit disappointed that only moerators have responded to the comment - so i feel a little uncomfortable as i am a consumer of sane and not speaking on behalf of sane, as the other two posters have.

If you'd like my view, as someone who accessed mbt privately for 2.5 years, happy to advise.

My clinician was a psychiatrist in the privaate system.

I qalso accessed in publicly, but it was not effective for me in this style.

Thanks

Hi @EternalFlower,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes please, I would appreciate your insights on your experience.

Not sure how to communicate it on here due to the sites guidelines. Is there a private message feature?

Apologies, I haven't spent a lot of time on here to know all the features.

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Why MBT @peaceandsafety  if you don't mind me asking? I think you are one of few people I have seen here on the forums who have specifically asked for MBT.

I've also finished an MBT course. I actually didn't know anything about mbt until I was admitted into the program and that's why your thread caught my attention.

I can't really describe what I 'learnt', but MBT did a world of good for me. It was the group aspect that was pretty sensational. It was tricky and the people I was in group with, let's say, weren't the easiest.... but the facilitators were great. There were usually 2 facilitators but at one stage, I had 3. Then there was the individual aspect which was also incredible.

My program was in Melbourne. I can't name the service, according to guidelines, but i believe this service is a research service that now also focuses on complex trauma and personality disorders.

Proud to say, I finished and graduated from the program and life's been great since. I'm living a life I never thought I'd be able to live. There were some people in my cohort who never finished the program due to their situation though, but I've come to know that the real work is done beyond the 18months.

Hope you find what you're looking for @peaceandsafety

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Can u explain why u cant mention the service?

I believe mentioning some services has been done before but not individuals? Either way happy to not mention either but just give general reflections. Would that work?

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

@peaceandsafety mbt was amazing and gentle with an attachment focus more than the skill, i saw a dr who doesnt advertise his skill in mbt but has an interest in it as well as psyhcodyanmics

I would try find a senior psych with knowledge in the condition u struggle with and a focus on psychotherapy as they tend to know all the different therpay styles and who does each one best !

I think it’s important to remember that people leave programs for a wide range of reasons —sometimes structural, sometimes relational, not always about ‘difficulty’. Each person’s experience is valid and deserves to be understood in context.

A few helpful websites :

https://blueknot.org.au/

They have a list of trauma informed therapists

I cant tell u my therapists name as he may not be suitable for u and then id be behaving unethically as I don't know ur diagnosis or history and it is so important no one on sane references any one clinican as we can all find them different

But ive used blue knot foundation and also think if u call private psychiatric hkpsitals in ur area u could maybe find a psychiatrist who does mbt. If they know about bpd and specialise in treating it or trauma , or specialise in psychotherapy that could be a good way in..good luck !

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Hi @Ru-bee nudge each other in helpful directions sounds great...just to be clear, is it ok to mention a specific service? I feel advertising csn be done in different ways and mentioning a specific clinician or clinic prob best left off this website.

Re: MBT Therapist in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs

Thanks all. Sad that we can't make recommendations. There is always a screening process as the therapists I have spoken to always seeks to understand what you are after and whether they can support you.

I had one reach out to me that I contacted, their books are closed at the moment but referred to another that has a whole team. They have already contacted me and put me on their wait list with their head clinician which I should be able to see before Xmas. They were very thorough in their phone assessment. This is not a tick and flick.
