PTSD Awareness Day 2021

PTSD Awareness Day

Hi there forums community,

The 27th of June is PTSD Awareness Day. On this day we raise awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the impact of trauma. It’s also a time to create a space to talk about recovery and treatment.

This year, we are posting to the Friends, Family and Carers Forum, inviting you to share your story and your experiences of supporting loved ones with PTSD. For many carers, you may also be living with PTSD and we invite you to share your personal experiences too.

The Facts about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • PTSD is an anxiety disorder that is experienced by around 12% of Australians. If you are experiencing PTSD or care for someone who is, you aren’t alone. At any one time there are 800,000- 1 million Australians living with PTSD.

  • PTSD can develop after experiencing a traumatic event, series of traumatic events or by experiencing vicarious trauma. Those who experience a series of traumatic events are more likely to develop PTSD.

  • Each person responds to traumatic events differently, and for some people the ongoing impact of trauma can lead to PTSD. This is the case for 20% of Australians who experience trauma.

  • Recovery from PTSD is possible! To hear more about recovery you can read our recent Topic Tuesdays on Understanding Trauma, and Trauma and Recovery

To learn more about PTSD, check out the SANE Factsheets.

Activity for PTSD Awareness Day:

Below are a few questions to start a conversation about the impact trauma has in our lives and the lives of our loved ones.

Let’s raise more awareness about PTSD and share with each other how we can be a support for those living with the ongoing impact of Trauma.

Questions for Carers, Friends, Family and Loved Ones

1. Is someone you care for living with PTSD and what impact has PTSD had in their life?

2. What do you do to support your loved one?

3. Thinking back to the start of your caring journey, what is one thing you wish you knew then about PTSD that you know now from experience?
